Context and commentary on verse 17.15
Four tests for speech. Shankara states it strictly: the word ‘cha’ shows that all the qualities must be present together. If one, two or three of these, causing no agitation, truth, pleasantness and benefit, are missing, it is not austerity of speech. ‘Priyahita’ for him is good in both seen and unseen results.
Sridhara Swami takes ‘anudvegakara’ as not causing fear, ‘hita’ as bringing happiness in the end, and ‘svadhyayabhyasana’ as the practice of the Veda. Ramanuja unfolds the verse directly: speech that causes others no agitation and is true, pleasant and beneficial. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Four questions before speaking or forwarding a message: is it true? Is it beneficial? Can it be said kindly? Does it cause needless fear?
False, frightening messages about health have kept many away from proper treatment. Not forwarding what is uncertain is also austerity of speech.
