Context and commentary on verse 17.14
The Gita’s austerity is not punishment of the body but discipline of conduct. According to Sridhara Swami the three verses from here give three forms of austerity, by body, speech and mind. For him the ‘prajna’ are knowers of truth other than one’s guru. According to Shankara ‘sharira’ means accomplished by the agent and the other factors in which the body is chief, and he links this to the later statement ‘these five are its causes’ (18.15).
Ramanuja’s senses are exact: ‘shaucha’ is bathing at holy waters and the like, and ‘arjava’ is conduct of speech, mind and body being one. His definition of ‘brahmacharya’ is notable: not looking at women with the notion that they are objects of enjoyment, and the like. ‘Ahimsa’ is not causing pain to beings. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.

For life today
Ramanuja’s definition of ‘brahmacharya’ fits today directly: not looking at another as an object of enjoyment. Respecting everyone’s dignity at work, on the street and online is how it is practised.
‘Arjava’, speech, mind and conduct being one. Children learn from what we do more than from what we say.
