Context and commentary on verse 17.16
It is notable that ‘silence’ is in the list of the mind’s austerity. Shankara gives the reason: even control of speech comes from restraint of the mind, so the cause is named by its effect. ‘Saumyatva’ is a state of the inner organ that can be inferred from a clear, cheerful face. For Madhva ‘mauna’ is contemplativeness, a nature that reflects deeply. He quotes the Brihadaranyaka (3.5.1): ‘having passed beyond childlikeness and learning, one becomes a muni’. For him ‘saumya’ means free of cruelty.
Ramanuja’s senses are lovely: ‘manahprasada’ is freedom from anger and the like, ‘saumyatva’ is the mind’s inclination towards the welfare of others, ‘mauna’ is controlling speech through the mind itself, and ‘bhavasamshuddhi’ is freedom from thoughts of things other than the self. For Sridhara Swami ‘bhavasamshuddhi’ is freedom from deceit in dealings.

For life today
Sitting in silence for a while each day, with the phone set aside, is today’s austerity of the mind. Slow breathing is a simple way to bring serenity to the mind.
Ramanuja’s ‘saumyatva’, a mind that wishes others to rise, is a remedy for envy. Congratulating a colleague’s success wholeheartedly is its practice.
