Context and commentary on verse 17.20
The threefold nature of giving begins here. Shankara takes ‘anupakarin’ as one unable to do a favour in return, and says giving without expectation even to one who is able also belongs here. His examples are a holy place such as Kurukshetra for place, Sankranti for time, and a scholar who knows the Veda with its six limbs for the worthy recipient. Sridhara Swami gives an eclipse as an example of time.
Ramanuja unfolds the verse briefly: giving without intent on fruit, with the thought ‘it ought to be given’, considering place, time and recipient, to one who has done no favour. The word ‘datavyam’ runs parallel to the earlier ‘yashtavyam eva’: the sense of duty is the mark of the sattvic. Madhva’s comment on this verse is not in our source text.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

Blood donation is a lovely example of this verse: the receiver is unknown, cannot return it, and it reaches the right person at the right time. Healthy adults can donate blood regularly.
‘Deshe kale cha patre cha’: where it is needed, when it is needed, to those who need it. Giving with an understanding of the real need makes a gift fruitful.
