Context and commentary on verse 5.12
Sridhara Swami says this answers the question of how the same action frees one person and binds another. The difference is not in the work but in the inner state of the one who does it. ‘Kamakara’ means desire itself taking the hand and making one act.
Shankara opens ‘naishthiki’, lasting, as the liberation born of steadfastness, and gives it a sequence: purity of mind, the gaining of knowledge, renunciation of all action, steadfastness in knowledge. The purpose of the verse, he concludes, is ‘so be steadfast’.
For Ramanuja the steadfast one is he who does not waver towards fruits other than the self and is turned towards the self alone. The peace he gains is the stable joy of experiencing the self. The one not steadfast remains forever in samsara. For Sridhara Swami the steadfast one is devoted to the Supreme Lord alone, the other is turned outward. Madhva simply glosses ‘yukta’ as one joined in yoga.

For life today
Two people may do the same job in the same hospital. At the end of the day one has a certain contentment, the other the burn of promotions, comparisons and calculations. From outside, their work looks identical.
Having no desire for the fruit is hard for all of us. But if the fruit only moves from the driver’s seat to the back seat, the road becomes much calmer.
