Context and commentary on verse 6.16
In the middle of the yoga of meditation, the Gita comes down to the body: food and sleep. In both it rejects the two extremes. This is a clear answer to the tendency to punish the body in the name of austerity.
Shankara quotes the Shatapatha Brahmana: food in the measure fit for oneself protects and does not harm; more than that harms, less than that does not protect. As another sense he gives a rule of the yoga texts: half the stomach for food, a quarter for water, the remaining quarter left empty for the movement of air.
Ramanuja adds two more pairs to the list: too much moving about and none at all, too much exertion and none at all. All of these stand against yoga.
Madhva makes a different point here. The prohibition of fasting and the like applies only to one who lacks the capacity. He quotes the Naradiya about the capable one who gives up sleep, food and the rest and succeeds in meditation. So some read this verse as a universal rule, and some as a rule suited to one’s capacity.

From a doctor’s point of view this is one of the most practical verses in the Gita. Overeating and long fasting both strain the body. Both too little and too much sleep are found to be linked with health problems. Sleep medicine bodies recommend around seven to nine hours a night for most adults.
The rule of ‘half the stomach for food, a quarter for water’ is a traditional measure, not one prescription for all. Those on medicines for diabetes, pregnant women, children and the elderly would do well to ask their doctor before changing how they eat or fast. If appetite or sleep changes sharply without reason, it may also be a sign of illness.
