Context and commentary on verse 6.31
‘However he may live’ is a delicate phrase, and the commentators read it carefully. The difference over ‘oneness’ from the last two verses continues here too.
For Shankara such a person of right vision, however he conducts himself, abides in the supreme state of Vishnu; he is ever free, and nothing obstructs his liberation. Sridhara Swami says such a one is no servant of injunctions; even if he gives up rites, he does not fall.
For Ramanuja ‘oneness’ means setting aside the differences of prakriti and seeing the uniform nature of all selves as knowledge. ‘However he may live’ means even when he has come out of yoga, he sees in himself and in all the likeness of the Lord.
Madhva takes ‘oneness’ as the conviction ‘one Lord everywhere’, and adds an important caution. This is no licence to do anything at all. One who sees thus usually does no wrong. A small wrong done through carelessness burns away, but a great one is itself a sign of sorrow to come, he says, quoting a saying.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The idea that rules do not apply to those who have reached spiritual heights has been misused by many in history. Madhva’s caution matters as much today: one who truly sees God in all cannot do harm to anyone.
But the other face of the verse is a comfort to ordinary people. Whether in a cave, a hospital or a kitchen, if the vision is right, the place does not matter.
