Context and commentary on verse 6.32
The account of the yoga of meditation ends with this verse, and it ends not in a cave but in the joys and sorrows of others. ‘Atmaupamya’ means taking oneself as the measure: as it is for me, so it is for others.
Shankara says it plainly: as pleasure is dear to me, so it is to all creatures; as pain is unwelcome to me, so it is to all. One who sees thus does nothing hostile to anyone; he is non-violent. Such a person, established in right vision, is the best of all yogis. Sridhara Swami calls him compassionate to all beings, one who wishes only happiness for all.
Ramanuja’s reading goes another way. Since all selves are alike in being knowledge, the joy of a son’s birth and the sorrow of a death are equally unconnected with the self, whether one’s own or another’s. One who sees the birth and death of his own son as he would another’s has reached the summit of yoga. Madhva calls this another explanation of sameness.

In medical education we speak a great deal about empathy. This is the Gita’s word for it: atmaupamya. The single question ‘if I were in this patient’s place, or my mother were, what would I want?’ can set many decisions right.
The sixth chapter’s instructions on meditation were about solitude, seat, breath and gaze. But the test of the highest yogi does not lie in them. It lies in whether another’s pain touches us as our own.
