For the mind is restless, Krishna, turbulent, strong and stubborn. To restrain it, I think, is as hard as holding the wind.
Context and commentary on verse 6.34
Arjuna gives the mind four epithets, each stronger than the last. Shankara opens them: restless, moving excessively; turbulent, churning body and senses and overpowering them; strong, beyond anyone’s control; stubborn, as uncuttable as the tantunaga.
Shankara also opens the address ‘Krishna’ here: ‘krish’ means to scrape, to draw away. Krishna is the one who draws away the sins and faults of his devotees. There may be a hint here that he alone can draw away the mind’s restlessness too.
The acharyas develop the image of the wind beautifully. For Ramanuja it is like trying to stop a great head-wind with a hand-fan. For Sridhara Swami it is like trying to shut up the wind of the sky in a pot. Ramanuja notes that Arjuna’s real request is ‘tell me the means of restraining the mind’. Madhva quotes a line from the Vyasayoga: since the mind is restless, the steadiness of yoga is not possible without practice or dispassion.

The word ‘pramathi’, churning, names an experience very familiar to doctors. Worry does not stay in the head alone; it comes down into the stomach, the chest, and sleep. It is true that the mind churns the body.
If the mind’s restlessness is severe enough to make daily work, sleep and relationships difficult, it may also be a sign of an anxiety disorder. There are effective treatments for it, and it need not be seen as a mere lack of willpower.
