Context and commentary on verse 7.24
Krishna stands before Arjuna and speaks like a man. To see this and think ‘he too is a prince born like us’ is the misunderstanding meant here. Each of the three acharyas stresses a different point in explaining the verse.
For Shankara the error is to think of the ever-present Lord as one who was once unmanifest and has now come into view. Ramanuja puts compassion at the centre: the Lord of all has descended as the son of Vasudeva, without giving up his nature, so that all may take refuge in him. Those who do not know this take him for an ordinary prince born under the force of karma, and do not take refuge in him.
For Madhva ‘avyakta’ means one without a material body, and ‘come into manifestation’ means having taken a material body. The undiscernment here, in his view, is taking the Person whose body is bliss to have a body of matter. The discussion of the avatara at verse 4.6 echoes here again.

For life today
All of us make the mistake of judging people by their outward look. The elder in simple clothes, the patient from a village, the mother who speaks no English: we often overlook the experience and wisdom within them.
Taking Krishna for ‘only a prince’ is an error at the spiritual level. A small version of it happens around us every day.
