Context and commentary on verse 7.7
The string of gems is among the best-known images in the Gita. The gems are seen, the thread is not. But without the thread there is no garland.
Shankara reads ‘paratara’ as ‘there is no other cause’: I alone am the cause of the world. Alongside the gems he adds the image of cloth woven on long threads. Madhva says it simply: I am the highest, and nothing is higher than me.
For Ramanuja this is one of the central verses of his philosophy. All that is sentient and insentient is the Lord’s body, and he is its self. He quotes the antaryami section of the Brihadaranyaka, ‘he whose body is the earth’. That is why, he explains, in the verses that follow every word, as in ‘I am the taste in water’, can name him.

For life today
In a family there is often one person who holds everyone together. They need not talk much or stand out. Only when they are gone do the gems scatter.
The body is the same. Systems such as the nerves and the circulation hold all the organs together as one, but we hardly think of them until they fail. Remembering the unseen thread is the habit this verse teaches.
