  • ಸರ್ವಾಣಿ ಭೂತಾನಿ ಏತದ್ಯೋನೀನಿ (सर्वाणि भूतानि एतद्योनीनि, sarvāṇi bhūtāni etadyonīni) = ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳೂ ಈ ಎರಡರಿಂದ ಹುಟ್ಟಿದವು (all beings have these two as their source)

Understand that all beings have these two natures as their source. I am the origin of the whole world, and likewise its dissolution.

Context and commentary on verse 7.6

The two natures are the ‘yoni’, the womb, of all beings. Both belong to the Lord. So through these natures he himself is the cause of the world: this is how Shankara lays out the verse’s reasoning. He calls the two the field and the knower of the field.

At ‘aham prabhavah pralayah’ Ramanuja adds a third thing: the Lord is not only the cause of origin and dissolution but also the ‘sheshi’, the owner of all. He quotes passages of the Vishnu Purana which say that both prakriti and purusha dissolve into the Supreme Self.

For Madhva the verse goes further still. His lordship is not only that the two natures are under his control. He is the cause of the very existence and the very knowing of everything. He cites the Chandogya’s ‘sarvakarma sarvakamah’ in support.

‘Where did we come from, where are we going’ is a question as old as humanity. This verse gives both questions a single answer: origin and dissolution lie in one source.

In a hospital, on the same day, a birth takes place in the labour ward and a death in another ward. Seeing both as parts of one great cycle is not easy. Yet such a view may soften the fear of death a little.
