Context and commentary on verse 7.9
Fragrance for earth, brilliance for fire: the list of the five elements is completed here. But why fragrance should be called ‘punya’, pure or auspicious, has caught the acharyas’ attention.
Shankara’s answer: fragrance is pure by nature. Though it is said of the earth, it applies to the rest too, such as the taste of water. Bad smells and bad tastes come from the ignorance and wrongdoing of beings and from mixing with other things. ‘Life’ is that by which all beings live.
Madhva reads ‘punya’ from the side of enjoyment: what the Lord enjoys is only the good, and sin does not touch him. He gives the Brihadaranyaka’s line that sin does not reach the gods. Ramanuja applies his explanation of the previous verse here as well.

For life today
The smell of the earth that rises from dry ground on the first day of rain is familiar to all of us. It is hard to read ‘punyo gandhah prithivyam’ and not remember it.
Those who work in an ICU understand ‘jivanam sarvabhuteshu’ in their own way. Machines can help breathing, and medicines can hold up the blood pressure. But the humility that life is larger than all of these comes there quickly.
