Context and commentary on verse 9.13
Against the devilish nature of the last two verses stands the divine nature here. A detailed list of both comes in the sixteenth chapter. Shankara calls the divine nature a disposition of qualities such as calm, self-control, compassion and faith. ‘Mahatma’ for him means one whose mind has no pettiness.
Ramanuja paints the great souls more closely: those who by their merit came to the Lord for refuge and lost the bonds of sin. They cannot sustain their mind, themselves or their senses without worshipping him, and worship is their only purpose. Madhva reads the great souls here as the devas: the Lord names those of divine nature here to show that not all are haters.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The sixteenth chapter describes the divine nature through qualities: fearlessness, compassion, forgiveness, non-violence. Not through birth.
So this nature can be cultivated. One small act of kindness a day, a moment’s pause before anger: in time these become one’s nature.
