Context and commentary on verse 9.24
Here is the outcome of the last verse’s ‘avidhi’. Shankara recalls the eighth chapter’s ‘adhiyajno ‘ham evatra’ (8.4). Those who worship without knowing the Lord as he is may gain the fruit of the rite, yet they slip from it and return.
For Ramanuja ‘prabhu’ means he is also the one who gives the fruit everywhere. He sees this as a wonder: among those engaged in the very same action, by a difference of intention alone, some gain a small fruit and fall, while others gain boundless joy and never return. Madhva calls this the reason worship becomes ‘vidhipurvaka’, rightly grounded: the awareness that he alone is the enjoyer and the lord.

For life today
Ramanuja’s wonder is still apt today. Two people do the same work, and for one it is a burden, for the other it is service.
Even a nurse changing a patient’s bed on a night shift draws the meaning of the work from the feeling behind it. When the work cannot be changed, the eye that sees it can.
