By me, whose form is unmanifest, all this world is pervaded. All beings dwell in me, but I do not dwell in them.
Context and commentary on verse 9.4
Here begins the subtlest part of the chapter. All things are in me, I am not in them, and in the next verse, ‘they are not in me either’. The three acharyas resolve this paradox in three ways.
For Shankara beings are in the Lord because he is their self, and nothing can exist without a self. But he is not in them, for he has no contact of the kind by which one thing sits inside another. He is more inward even than space, and clings to nothing.
Ramanuja turns to the Brihadaranyaka’s section on the inner controller: the one who dwells in the earth, unknown to the earth, who has the earth for his body and rules it from within. Beings rest in him as his body and are upheld by him. That he is not in them means his being does not depend on them. Madhva takes ‘avyaktamurti’ as the key word: it answers why, though pervading everything, he is not seen.

For life today
The air we breathe and the gravity that holds us are invisible. Yet not a moment passes without them.
Health is like that too. While it is there no one notices it, and only when it is lost does its worth become clear. The verse reminds us that what is unseen is not therefore absent.
