About this subhashita
Sanu is not the summit. It is the level ground partway up, where one straightens the back and takes a breath. The good man is not the end of the road but a standing place on it.
Rajyate comes from the root ranj, to take colour, and from there to be pleased. The shade of meaning is in the word itself: a man who has come from colourless company takes colour from a good one.
The first word, drishta, seen, matters. The worth of good people is not known from birth. The verse concedes that it is learnt after one has seen the bad.

For life today
A resident who has worked a year under a careless senior knows a careful one at once. That is hard to teach in a class.
But the picture should not be forgotten. The man resting on the shelf must climb again. Good company gives rest; the road does not end there.
