ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸದ ಪೂರ್ಣಿಮೆಯಂದು ದೀಪ ಬೆಳಗುವಾಗ ಹೇಳುವ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಇದು, ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕು ಎಷ್ಟು ಮಹತ್ವದ್ದು ಎಂದು ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ.

ಕ್ರಿಮಿ ಕೀಟಗಳಿಂದ ಹಿಡಿದು ಜಲಚರ, ಸ್ಥಳಚರ ಜೀವಿಗಳವರೆಗೆ, ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಕಂಡವರೆಲ್ಲರಿಗೂ ಪುನರ್ಜನ್ಮದ ಬಂಧನದಿಂದ ಬಿಡುಗಡೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಭಾವ ಇಲ್ಲಿದೆ.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಕೀಟಾಃ ಪತಂಗಾಃ ಮಶಕಾಶ್ಚ ವೃಕ್ಷಾಃ ಜಲೇ ಸ್ಥಲೇ ಯೇ ನಿವಸಂತಿ ಜೀವಾಃ ।

कीटाः पतङ्गाः मशकाश्च वृक्षाः जले स्थले ये निवसन्ति जीवाः ।
दृष्ट्वा प्रदीपं न च जन्म तेषां दीपप्रदानात् खलु मुक्तिरेव ॥

ಶ್ಲೋಕ (IAST)

kīṭāḥ pataṅgāḥ maśakāśca vṛkṣāḥ jale sthale ye nivasanti jīvāḥ |
dṛṣṭvā pradīpaṃ na ca janma teṣāṃ dīpapradānāt khalu muktireva ||

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ

ಕೀಟಾಃ ಪತಂಗಾಃ ಮಶಕಾಃ ಚ (कीटाः पतङ्गाः मशकाः च, kīṭāḥ pataṅgāḥ maśakāḥ ca) = ಕ್ರಿಮಿಗಳು, ಪತಂಗಗಳು, ಸೊಳ್ಳೆಗಳು (insects, moths and mosquitoes)
ವೃಕ್ಷಾಃ (वृक्षाः, vṛkṣāḥ) = ಮರಗಳು (trees)
ಜಲೇ ಸ್ಥಲೇ ಯೇ ನಿವಸಂತಿ ಜೀವಾಃ (जले स्थले ये निवसन्ति जीवाः, jale sthale ye nivasanti jīvāḥ) = ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಜೀವಿಗಳು (the beings that live in water and on land)
ದೃಷ್ಟ್ವಾ ಪ್ರದೀಪಮ್ (दृष्ट्वा प्रदीपम्, dṛṣṭvā pradīpam) = ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಮೇಲೆ (having seen the lamp)
ನ ಚ ಜನ್ಮ ತೇಷಾಮ್ (न च जन्म तेषाम्, na ca janma teṣām) = ಅವಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಜನ್ಮವಿಲ್ಲ (for them there is no birth again)
ದೀಪಪ್ರದಾನಾತ್ ಖಲು ಮುಕ್ತಿಃ ಏವ (दीपप्रदानात् खलु मुक्तिः एव, dīpapradānāt khalu muktiḥ eva) = ದೀಪದಾನದಿಂದಲೇ ಖಂಡಿತ ಮುಕ್ತಿ (through the gift of the lamp alone, liberation indeed)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)

ಕ್ರಿಮಿಗಳು, ಪತಂಗಗಳು, ಸೊಳ್ಳೆಗಳು, ಮರಗಳು, ನೀರಿನಲ್ಲಿ ನೆಲದಲ್ಲಿ ವಾಸಿಸುವ ಜೀವಿಗಳು ಯಾವುವೇ ಆಗಲಿ, ದೀಪವನ್ನು ಕಂಡ ಮೇಲೆ ಅವಕ್ಕೆ ಮತ್ತೆ ಜನ್ಮವಿಲ್ಲ, ದೀಪದಾನದಿಂದಲೇ ಅವಕ್ಕೆ ಮುಕ್ತಿ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ.

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)

Whatever insects, moths, mosquitoes, trees, or beings living in water and on land there may be, once they have seen the lamp there is no birth for them again; through the gift of the lamp alone comes their liberation.

ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಸದಲ್ಲಿ ದೀಪ ಬೆಳಗುವ ಆಚರಣೆಯನ್ನು ಹಿರಿಮೆಗೊಳಿಸುವ ಕಾರ್ತಿಕ ಮಾಹಾತ್ಮ್ಯ ಪರಂಪರೆಯ ಶ್ಲೋಕಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಇದೂ ಒಂದು, ಪಾಠದಲ್ಲಿ ಸಣ್ಣಪುಟ್ಟ ವ್ಯತ್ಯಾಸಗಳಿವೆ.

This is one of the verses from the Kartika Mahatmya tradition that extol lighting lamps through the month of Kartika, and small variations exist in its wording.

ಕ್ರಿಮಿ ಕೀಟಗಳಂಥ ಅತಿ ಸಣ್ಣ ಜೀವಿಗಳಿಗೂ ದೀಪದ ಫಲ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂಬ ಈ ಕಲ್ಪನೆ, ದೀಪದ ಬೆಳಕನ್ನು ಎಲ್ಲ ಜೀವಿಗಳಿಗೂ ಸಮನಾಗಿ ಹಂಚುವ ವಿಶಾಲ ದೃಷ್ಟಿಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.

The idea that even the smallest creatures such as insects share in the merit of the lamp shows a broad outlook that offers its light equally to every being.

The sense that even one small lamp we light reaches so many creatures around us is also a reminder of the worth of small good deeds.
