mahatāṃ prārthanenaiva vipattirapi śobhate |
dantabhaṅgo hi nāgānāṃ ślāghyo girividāraṇe ||
- ಮಹತಾಮ್ (महताम्, mahatām) = ದೊಡ್ಡವರಿಗೆ (of the great)
- ಪ್ರಾರ್ಥನೇನ (प्रार्थनेन, prārthanena) = ಕೈಗೊಂಡ ಗುರಿಯಿಂದಲೇ (by the very thing they sought)
- ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಅದರಿಂದಲೇ (by that alone)
- ದನ್ತಭಙ್ಗಃ (दन्तभङ्गः, dantabhaṅgaḥ) = ದಂತ ಮುರಿಯುವುದು (the breaking of a tusk)
- ಗಿರಿವಿದಾರಣೇ (गिरिविदारणे, girividāraṇe) = ಬೆಟ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸೀಳುವಲ್ಲಿ (in the splitting of a mountain)
For the great, by reason of the very thing they set out for, even disaster looks well on them. A tusk broken in the splitting of a mountain is a thing to praise in an elephant.
About this subhashita
Prarthana here is not a request in the ordinary sense. It is the aim taken up out of desire. The turn of the verse is that the measure of the aim settles the measure of the failure.
A tusk is not mere ornament to an elephant; it is its weapon. Breaking it is no small loss. The verse still calls it praiseworthy, because what stood in front was a mountain.
Putting shobhate, looks becoming, next to vipatti, disaster, is itself a contradiction. The verse does not resolve it by argument but settles it with the picture in the second line.

For life today
A study that takes up a large question may end without a result. Even the report of that failure shows the way to those who come next. It is worth more than a win on an easy question.
There is a caution in this. The tusk broken in splitting a mountain is the one that looks well, not one broken while idly scratching the ground. Whether the aim was large is a question we must put to ourselves.
