ಒಂದು ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಕೆಲಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ ಎಂದು ಗೊತ್ತಾದ ಮೇಲೂ ಅದನ್ನೇ ಮುಂದುವರಿಸುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಒಂದು ಕಾರಣ ಇರುತ್ತದೆ. ಆ ಕಾರಣ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ರೋಗಿಯ ಪರವಾಗಿರುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
ಈ ಉಪಜಾತಿ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಆ ಕಾರಣವನ್ನು ಹೆಸರಿಸಿ, ಕೊನೆಯ ಪಾದದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ತೋರಿಸುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಮಿಥ್ಯೌಷಧೈರ್ಹನ್ತ ಮೃಷಾಕಷಾಯೈ-
ರಸಹ್ಯಲೇಹ್ಯೈರಯಥಾರ್ಥತೈಲೈಃ ।
ವೈದ್ಯಾ ಇಮೇ ವರ್ಧಿತರುಗ್ಣವರ್ಗಾಃ
ಪಿಚಣ್ಡಭಾಣ್ಡಂ ಪರಿಪೂರಯನ್ತಿ ॥

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಮಿಥ್ಯೌಷಧೈಃ (मिथ्यौषधैः, mithyauṣadhaiḥ) = ಸುಳ್ಳು ಔಷಧಿಗಳಿಂದ (with false medicines)
- ಹನ್ತ (हन्त, hanta) = ಅಯ್ಯೋ (alas)
- ಮೃಷಾಕಷಾಯೈಃ (मृषाकषायैः, mṛṣākaṣāyaiḥ) = ಬರಿಯ ಸುಳ್ಳಿನ ಕಷಾಯಗಳಿಂದ (with sham decoctions)
- ಅಸಹ್ಯಲೇಹ್ಯೈಃ (असह्यलेह्यैः, asahyalehyaiḥ) = ಸಹಿಸಲಾಗದ ಲೇಹ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ (with electuaries no one can bear)
- ಅಯಥಾರ್ಥತೈಲೈಃ (अयथार्थतैलैः, ayathārthatailaiḥ) = ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ತೈಲಗಳಿಂದ (with oils that are not what they are said to be)
- ವೈದ್ಯಾಃ (वैद्याः, vaidyāḥ) = ವೈದ್ಯರು (physicians)
- ಇಮೇ (इमे, ime) = ಈ (these)
- ವರ್ಧಿತ (वर्धित, vardhita) = ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡ (made to increase)
- ರುಗ್ಣ (रुग्ण, rugṇa) = ರೋಗಿಗಳ (of the sick)
- ವರ್ಗಾಃ (वर्गाः, vargāḥ) = ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಉಳ್ಳವರು (whose ranks, having grown them)
- ಪಿಚಣ್ಡಭಾಣ್ಡಮ್ (पिचण्डभाण्डम्, picaṇḍabhāṇḍam) = ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯೆಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು (the pot that is the paunch)
- ಪರಿಪೂರಯನ್ತಿ (परिपूरयन्ति, paripūrayanti) = ತುಂಬಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ (they fill right up)
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಅಯ್ಯೋ, ಸುಳ್ಳು ಔಷಧಿಗಳಿಂದ, ಬರಿಯ ಸುಳ್ಳಿನ ಕಷಾಯಗಳಿಂದ, ಸಹಿಸಲಾಗದ ಲೇಹ್ಯಗಳಿಂದ, ಹೇಳಿದಂತೆ ಇಲ್ಲದ ತೈಲಗಳಿಂದ, ಈ ವೈದ್ಯರು ರೋಗಿಗಳ ಗುಂಪನ್ನು ಬೆಳೆಸಿಕೊಂಡು ತಮ್ಮ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆಯೆಂಬ ಪಾತ್ರೆಯನ್ನು ತುಂಬಿಸಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತಾರೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
Alas, with false medicines, with sham decoctions, with electuaries no one can swallow, with oils that are not what they are said to be, these physicians grow the ranks of the sick and fill up the pot that is their own paunch.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಮೊದಲ ಎರಡು ಪಾದಗಳ ನಾಲ್ಕು ತೃತೀಯಾ ರೂಪಗಳು ಔಷಧ, ಕಷಾಯ, ಲೇಹ್ಯ, ತೈಲ ಎಂಬ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಕಲ್ಪಗಳನ್ನು ಹೆಸರಿಸುತ್ತವೆ. ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದಕ್ಕೂ ತನ್ನದೇ ತಿರಸ್ಕಾರದ ಪದ: ಮಿಥ್ಯಾ, ಮೃಷಾ, ಅಸಹ್ಯ, ಅಯಥಾರ್ಥ. ಪಟ್ಟಿ ಒಂದು ಔಷಧಾಲಯದ ಅಲಮಾರಿಯಂತೆ ಸಾಗುತ್ತದೆ.
The four instrumentals of the first two lines name four dosage forms: the pill, the decoction, the electuary, the oil. Each gets its own dismissive word: mithya, mrisha, asahya, ayathartha. The list runs like the shelves of a dispensary.
ವರ್ಧಿತರುಗ್ಣವರ್ಗಾಃ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ವರ್ಧಿತ ಪ್ರೇರಣಾರ್ಥಕ ರೂಪ. ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಕೆಟ್ಟ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸೆ ಸಿಗುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಅವರ ಸಂಖ್ಯೆಯನ್ನೇ ಬೆಳೆಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಬೆಳೆ ಬೆಳೆಸುವ, ದನ ಸಾಕುವ ಪದವನ್ನು ರೋಗಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಹಚ್ಚಿದ್ದು ಇಲ್ಲಿನ ಕ್ರೂರ ಚಮತ್ಕಾರ.
In vardhitarugnavargah, vardhita is a causative. It is not merely that the sick are badly treated; their number is grown. Using the word for raising a crop or a herd about human patients is the cruel stroke here.
ಪಿಚಂಡ ಎಂದರೆ ಡುಬ್ಬ, ಭಾಂಡ ಎಂದರೆ ಪಾತ್ರೆ. ಔಷಧಾಲಯದ ಪಾತ್ರೆಗಳ ಸಾಲಿನಲ್ಲಿ ಇನ್ನೊಂದು ಪಾತ್ರೆ ಇದೆ ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತದೆ, ಅದು ವೈದ್ಯನ ಹೊಟ್ಟೆ.
Picanda is the paunch, bhanda is a pot. The verse says that among the dispensary’s row of jars there is one more jar, and it is the physician’s belly.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಇಂದಿನ ರೂಪ ಸುಳ್ಳು ತೈಲವಲ್ಲ. ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲದ ಪರೀಕ್ಷೆ, ಬೇಕಿಲ್ಲದ ಪ್ರಕ್ರಿಯೆ, ಕಾರಣವಿಲ್ಲದ ಮರುಭೇಟಿ. ಇವು ರೋಗಿಗಿಂತ ಚಿಕಿತ್ಸಾಲಯಕ್ಕೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಸಹಾಯ ಮಾಡುತ್ತವೆ.
The modern form is not a fake oil. It is the test that was not needed, the procedure that was not needed, the follow-up visit with no reason behind it. These help the practice more than they help the patient.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಶುಲ್ಕದ ವಿರುದ್ಧವಲ್ಲ, ಪ್ರೇರಣೆಯ ವಿರುದ್ಧ. ರೋಗಿ ಬೇಗ ಗುಣವಾದರೆ ವೈದ್ಯನಿಗೆ ನಷ್ಟವಾಗುವ ವ್ಯವಸ್ಥೆ ಇದ್ದಲ್ಲಿ ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಯಾವಾಗಲೂ ಪ್ರಸ್ತುತ.
The verse is not against charging a fee. It is against an incentive. Wherever a system means the physician loses when the patient gets better quickly, this verse stays current.
