A man without literature, music or art is plainly a beast, wanting only the tail and the horns. He stays alive without eating grass, and that is the beasts’ great good fortune.
About this subhashita
The word sakshat removes the simile. The verse does not say “like a beast”. It says “a beast”. Then it closes the way out by adding that the only difference is the tail and the horns.
The last line turns another way. He does not eat grass, so the real beasts get to keep theirs. The abuse ends as a joke, and it is the joke that has kept the verse in memory so long.
Note that literature, music and art are bound into a single compound. They are not three separate hobbies here. They stand as three faces of one kind of inward growth.

For life today
In the training years it is natural to put off books, music and pictures until later. Many people find that the later never arrives.
The verse is not asking for accomplishment in the arts. It asks only for listening, reading and looking. Half an hour sitting down to hear one piece of music is a beginning.
