Let Brahma be long-lived. But his remaining four heads must be well guarded by you, for it is he who wrote this destitution on earth. O Shiva, what argument have I to make? The working of your sidelong glance protects me with its limpid grace, and of its own accord it is intent upon raising the lowly.
Context and commentary on verse 16
In the previous verse the poet questioned Brahma’s writing. Here the same thought takes a step further. ‘Let Brahma be long-lived’ looks at first like a blessing. But the words that follow at once, that his remaining four heads must be guarded by you, give the blessing a light, wry turn. The Puranas say that Brahma once had five heads and lost one to the tip of Shiva’s fingernail, and the details of the story differ from Purana to Purana.
The skill of the phrasing deserves notice. Where does the danger to the other heads come from? The answer lies inside the word ‘samrakshyam’, to be well guarded. Since it was Brahma who wrote the poet’s poverty, Shiva might grow angry, and so Shiva himself must be the one to guard him. Besides, ‘tatparashirashchatushkam’ may be read as ‘tat para shirashchatushkam’, the four heads other than that one, or ‘tatparah’, diligent, may be taken with Shiva, as several readers do. Either reading gives the same picture.
In the third quarter the arguing stops. ‘Vicharah ko va’ means what is there left for me to debate. The poet need build no case against Brahma’s writ, because the ‘vyapara’ of Shiva’s glance, its natural business, is to lift the lowly. The word ‘svayam api’, of its own accord, carries weight: grace needs no cause outside itself. It is usual to take ‘vishada’ with grace, as limpid grace, though some read it as a vocative addressing Shiva as the lucid one.
Verses 15 to 19 form a run of pleading, and this one stands at its turning point. The previous verse was a complaint, and this one drops the complaint and lays the weight on grace. Joking with God in this familiar way is an old path in devotional poetry. The metre is shikharini, seventeen syllables to the quarter, with the pause after the sixth.

Standing in a bank queue, when our work is held up we grow annoyed with the clerk at the counter. But the rule was written by someone else, sitting somewhere else.
Hunting down whoever wrote the rule only spends the hours. A small courtesy from the person opposite us moves the work along. The poet too leaves off arguing about Brahma’s writ and turns towards grace.
