If you are not simply overlooking me, why do you not erase this writing of Vidhi, which is turned away from meditation on you and crowded with futile longings? And if you say you are unable, then, O Pashupati, was not that head of Vidhata well rounded? How, in that case, did it come away without any effort at all, at the mere tip of your fingernail?
Context and commentary on verse 15
The verse sets two possibilities before Shiva and closes both. If you are not overlooking me, why do you not erase the writing on my forehead? If you have not the power to erase it, was it not you who took off Brahma’s head itself with the tip of a nail? Showing that neither indifference nor inability will stand, the poet leaves no other road open for his request.
Vidhilipi means the writing of Vidhi. Behind it lies the belief that Brahma writes a child’s life on its forehead at birth, what Kannada calls hanebaraha. Vidhi is both a name of Brahma and a word for a rule. It is worth noticing that what the poet asks to have erased is not his hardship. He names only two qualities of that writing: it is turned away from meditation on you, and it is crowded with futile longings. What is to be erased is this turning of the mind.
The story of Brahma’s head needs a short telling. The Puranas say that Brahma once had five heads and that Shiva removed one of them. The versions differ over the reason. In some the fifth head spoke arrogantly, in others Brahma lied about having reached the top of the pillar of light. In several versions it is not Shiva himself but Bhairava, his fierce form, who tore the head off with the nail of his left thumb, and they add that the guilt of killing a brahmin then followed him. The verse’s ‘karanakhamukha’, the tip of a hand’s nail, fits this version with the nail. Tradition explains that this is why Brahma is now said to have four heads.
‘Suvritta’ carries a pun. Vritta means round, so suvritta means nicely rounded, a natural way to describe a head. Vritta also means conduct, so suvritta means of good conduct. When the two senses stand together a small irony rises within the line. It was well rounded, it was of good conduct, and still it did not survive. Many read the two negatives of ‘na na khalu’ as combining into an emphatic yes.
Of the verses so far this is the boldest. Arguing with God in this way, and holding up an earlier deed as evidence, is a long established manner in the tradition of hymns. It is not disrespect but the way of speaking used with those who are close. The claim of kinship in the fourteenth verse has made room for this daring. The next verse takes up the same story again and says, half in jest, that Brahma may live long but that his four remaining heads must be guarded by you. The metre is shikharini.

Everyone has already said of an old machine that it cannot be set right. Even so the workman in the workshop lifts the cover and looks inside.
When we say that this is our fate, it is often the language of tiredness. Separating what cannot be changed from what is still in our hands opens a little room.
