O foe of Smara, my mind is a tent of cloth. Firmness is the pillar that holds it up, stout ropes of good qualities bind it, it can be lifted and carried anywhere, it is worked in many colours, rich with lotuses, pitched each day upon the good road, and it is spotless. Reach that tent, O lord, and reign there in triumph together with Shakti, O Shiva, served by your ganas, O all-pervading one.
Context and commentary on verse 21
A patakuti is a tent of cloth. It was the old practice to pitch such a tent along the route for a king on the march or for a god taken out in procession. The poet is handing over his own mind as one such tent. Every epithet in the verse fits both the tent and the mind. Dhriti is courage and patience, and it is the central pole. Sagamana means that it can be carried from place to place, and the word also points to the mind’s constant movement.
The pun on the word guna, which means both a rope and a good quality, is the life of this verse. Without ropes the tent will not stand, and without qualities the mind will not stand. In verse 20 the mind was a monkey, and the prayer was to bind it fast with devotion. The language of binding continues here, but what the binding produces is not a prison. It sets up a dwelling.
Several senses are given for padmadhya. One is the lotuses embroidered on the cloth of the tent. Another is the lotus of the heart in which God is seated. Since padma is also the name of a very large number, many read it as meaning full of wealth. In pratidivasa-sanmarga-ghatita the picture of a march is completed. Where the day’s road ends the tent is taken down and pitched again, and the mind too has to be pitched afresh each day upon the good road. Vishada means free of stain, clear enough for light to pass through.
Jaya is an imperative. Here the sense fits better as reign in triumph than as conquer. The invitation is not to Shiva alone. He is asked to come with Shakti and with the whole retinue of the ganas, and what is offered is room for an entire camp rather than for a single guest. The vocative smarare, foe of Kama, is also deliberate. The mind that was running along Kama’s road in the previous verse is now handed over to the one who burnt him. The metre is shikharini, seventeen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the sixth.

For life today
On the first day in a rented room in a new town, standing among the boxes, the first thing we do is spread a mat and light a lamp. The place may be small, but once it is clean we find the courage to call someone in.
Our mind too is a temporary lodging. We may not be able to make it a palace. But we can sweep it, tighten the ropes of one or two good habits, and pitch it each day on the same road.
