The monkey of my heart always roams in the forest of delusion, dances on the hill of young women’s breasts, and leaps in a flash, wherever it pleases, on the branches of hope. O bearer of the skull, O mendicant, it is exceedingly restless. O Shiva, O Vibhu, bind it firmly with devotion and make it subject to you.
Context and commentary on verse 20
The whole verse holds a single image to the end. The mind is a monkey, delusion is the forest, a woman’s breast is the hill, and hopes are the branches. Every trait of a monkey is given its own place. The poet says plainly where the mind actually goes, and shows no interest in lingering over it. This is honest self-examination.
Three verbs give three different movements. ‘Charati’ is to roam, ‘natati’ is to dance, and ‘atati’ is to range about in leaps. With them the two words ‘jhatiti’, in a flash, and ‘svairam’, as it pleases, bring the monkey’s sudden jumps before the eye. ‘Chapala’ means fickle, unable to keep still. The opening word ‘sada’, always, marks this as a daily condition rather than an occasional trouble.
Notice what is asked. The poet does not ask for the monkey to be killed, but to be tied, and the rope is devotion. In the pair ‘baddhva kuru’ there are two steps, first the binding and then the bringing under control. Many readers see behind this the familiar sight of a showman holding his performing monkey on a rope. The movement does not stop, but it acquires a master.
The choice of the two vocatives is not accidental. ‘Kapalin’ means the one who holds a skull, and ‘Bhiksho’ the one who begs. Shiva, who has given up everything and stands empty-handed, is the right one to take this restless mind. Many hear the suggestion that what the poet drops into the begging bowl is his own monkey-like mind. Some also read the echo between ‘kapala’ and ‘kapi’, monkey, as deliberate, though that cannot be said with certainty.
The previous verse moved from complaint to surrender. Here the surrender becomes a definite request: hold my mind yourself. In the next verse the mind takes another form, a tent pitched on the post of steadiness. The metre is shikharini.

For life today
Sitting by a train window, the eye jumps from a field to a post, from the post to a roof. It settles on nothing. For much of the day the mind is just like that.
It cannot be beaten into stillness. Like a calf that grazes as far as its rope allows, when the mind is tied to work we love or to one settled daily practice, the moving about remains but it gains a direction.
