ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O God, for people like me, is not one act of service to you enough, or one bow, one hymn, one worship, one remembrance, one hearing of your story, or at the least one look? O Lord, what is gained by the toil of following unsteady deities? What release comes from them? And if release does come from anywhere, what is then left to pray for?
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 33ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 33
The list in the verse comes down step by step. Service is work of the body, nati is a bending, nuti is praise in words, puja is regular attendance, smarana is remembrance in the mind, kathashravana is the work of the ears, and alokana is a single look of the eyes. Each is smaller than the one before, until only a look is left. Sakrit eva means even once, with the suggestion that once is enough. Madrisham, for people like me, is plural, and with it the poet places himself in the row of ordinary people.
The word asthiradevata needs care. One sense is deities whose own station is not permanent, and the Puranic reckoning that the office of Indra changes with each manvantara supports it. Another sense is those who grant unstable fruit, small gains that come and go. In the view of Advaita all deities are forms of the one reality, so the line need not be read as disparaging other gods. Verse 8 made the same argument through examples of illusion.
The last quarter is taken in more than one way. One way runs thus: what release comes from them, and if release does come from anywhere, then nothing is left to pray for afterwards. Another way: if the question is where release comes from, then you are the only thing to ask for. The drift of both is the same. That running about does not bring release.
Like verse 31, this verse too opens with nalam va. That is not a slip in the text but a deliberate pairing. There the question was whether one act of help from Shiva is not enough for us. Here it is whether one small act of ours is not enough. Read together, the generosity of the giver and the small strength of the asker stand side by side. The metre is shardulavikridita, a quarter of nineteen syllables.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
In a library some people move from shelf to shelf, pull out ten books and pile them on the table, and by evening have finished none of them.
Our learning and our devotion can scatter in the same way. Completing one thing does more than touching ten. Even a single bow, or one moment of remembrance, has its own weight if it is whole.
