O Shambhu, O great soul, how did you even look at that poison, fierce with flame, which struck fear into all the gods and into their enemies? You took it in your hand: was what lay in your palm a ripe rose apple? You set it on your tongue: was it a siddha’s pill? You held it in your throat: is what we see there a sapphire ornament of yours? Tell us.

Context and commentary on verse 32

The previous verse gave the reason why the poison stopped in the throat. This verse is not satisfied with a reason. It lines up its wonder as a row of questions. You looked, you held it in your hand, you set it on your tongue, you kept it in your throat: that is the ordinary order in which a fruit is eaten. Because halahala stands where the fruit should be, the ordinary order itself becomes astonishing.

Colour and size both work in the three comparisons. A ripe rose apple is blue black and small enough to hold in the palm, and the poison had that same colour. Siddhaghutika is the pill of the siddhas, the small pellet which the alchemical tradition says confers powers when held on the tongue. Nilamani is the sapphire, and the poet sees the blue black mark left in the throat as a jewel worn at the neck. What frightened all the worlds stayed on as an ornament.

The second word can be read in more than one way. Split as sakala amara arati, sakalamarati means the enemies of the immortals, that is, the asuras. Split as sakala amara and ati, it means that the poison gave great fear to all the immortals. Both gods and asuras were at the churning and both fled, so either reading fits the verse. In the full meaning above we have kept both.

The question words kim and va come again and again and give the verse a pace that does not stop for breath. At the close, vada means tell, and this turn of asking Shiva himself for the answer appears at several places in the Shivananda Lahari. Verse 31 counted the act of help. This verse stands amazed at the manner of it. The metre is shardulavikridita, a quarter of nineteen syllables.

For life today

The hands of the man at the cycle repair shop on the street are black with oil. He picks up a chain that has come off without hesitating, while to those standing and watching even touching it looks difficult.

That ease has come from practice. When someone near us handles a hard task lightly, it does not mean the task is light for them. Those who watch do not see how many years of trained hands lie behind what looks easy.
