Context and commentary on verse 39
Several verses before this were requests, and this one is a report. It says what has come about. The cause, though, lies in the last line. Sanskrit calls this construction sati saptami, the locative absolute, which joins two things as: this being so, that followed. Everything good in the first three lines rests on the single condition that the lord of kaivalya has taken his seat in the lotus city of the mind.
Behind the words about dharma’s four feet lies an old picture. Tradition speaks of dharma as a bull that stood on four legs in the Krita age and lost a leg in each age that followed. Many recall that the Bhagavata names the bull’s four legs as truth, purity, compassion and austerity. Besides this, some read the four feet as the four stages of life. Since the bull is also Shiva’s mount, the image carries added weight here.
The words of the second line stand in an order. First sin goes, then the inward stains of desire, anger and pride melt, and then time itself comes to show forth happiness. It is worth noticing the sequence: the deed goes first, and the leaning of the mind that produces it goes after. The word vigalita means that which has melted and slipped away, not that which has been cut off.
The image of the herb in the third line is the loveliest part of the verse. An aushadhi is a medicinal plant, and a mahaushadhi a great creeper or plant. A plant does not fruit as soon as it is set in the ground, and waiting is needed. Here knowledge and bliss are not two plants but one plant with one fruit. In the view of Advaita, awareness and bliss are not separate, so the compound is exact.
In the last line the mind is a city and Shiva the ruler seated in it. The verse uses the old belief that when the ruler is in his capital the realm is at peace. Most read rajavatamsa as the crest-jewel of kings, while others take raja as the moon and read it as he who wears the moon on his head. This picture of a city grows in verse 42 into a fort, the manodurga. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with the pause after the twelfth.

For life today
A four-legged wooden bench in a small shop rocks if one leg is short. A folded piece of paper is pushed under it to set it right, and still those who sit on it feel the rocking all day.
Our daily life also stands on a few legs: work, home, health, trust. If one weakens, the rocking does not stop however sound the others are. The first task is to notice which leg has weakened.
