Context and commentary on verse 38
The first two and a half lines of this verse have to be read twice, once of the moon and once of Shiva. Taken of the moon the picture is plain: risen on the path of the holy eastern mountain, a body of nectar, shining clear and auspicious, bearing the hare’s mark, at the full, clearing away the darkness, the moon is reflected in a lake. Taken of Shiva the same words yield other senses.
The pairs may be taken one by one. Soma is the moon, and, split as sa with Uma, it is Shiva who is with Uma. Sudhamurti is the disc of the moon that holds the nectar, and Shiva who is deathless bliss embodied. Mrigadhara is the moon that bears the mark of the hare, and Shiva who holds the deer in his hand. Tamomochaka is the moon that clears the darkness of night, and Shiva who releases from the darkness of ignorance. Purna is the moon at the full, and that which lacks nothing at all. Prasanna is clear light, and a mind well disposed.
The last two statements join the two senses in a single picture. When the moon rises the sea swells, and so, when Shiva is seen within, the ocean of bliss swells. When the moon rises the sumanas, the flowers, open, and so too the vritti, the inward turning, of the sumanas, the good-minded, comes forth. Since vritti carries the senses of unfolding, of conduct and of livelihood, the line serves in all three directions.
The word at the centre of the verse is chetahpushkara. Pushkara means a lake, a lotus and also the sky. What is seen in a lake is the moon’s reflection, not the moon. If the water stirs, the reflection breaks, and nothing happens to the moon in the sky. Shiva is seen within in the same way: he appears when the mind is still and not when it is troubled. The first word, prakpunya, is honest too, for it grants that this seeing does not come from the effort of this moment alone.
Three of the words here had already appeared in verse 3: mrigadhara, Shiva, and the idea of Samba. There they were details of the form worshipped in the heart, while here the same words work as a description of the moon as well. The clear water of the pot in verse 36 has widened here into a lake. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter, with the pause after the twelfth.

For life today
On an evening when the power goes, all work in the street stops. In the one moment when the light returns there is a stir in the houses, and everyone picks up again what they had put down.
That the rest follows once a small light comes is true of our inward life as well. On a day when the mind is clear, the work to be done does not look hard. But we have to grant, too, that such clearness does not come from our effort alone.
