O god to whom a fort is most dear, my mind is a fort. Depth of character is its moat, unshaken resolve its rampart, the mass of virtues on the rise its trusted army, the crowded throng of the senses stationed in the body its gates, and the abundance of learning its stores. In this fort of my mind, furnished with all these materials, take up your residence always.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 42ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 42
The verse holds one image to the end. The mind is a fort, and the poet counts off its parts one by one. The moat is gambhirya, the inner depth that is not easily stirred. The rampart is ghanadhriti, steadiness built thick. The army is the virtues on the rise, the gates are the senses, the stores are learning. Only one thing is missing at the close, the lord who should live in the fort, and that is what the poet asks for.
In verse 21 the mind was a cloth tent, its pillars made of resolve and its ropes of firm virtues. Here the same resolve and virtues have become a rampart and an army. A tent is a lodging for a day, a fort for many years. Out of the same materials the poet has raised the larger building, and he invites Shiva inside.
The address ‘durgatipriyadeva’ is split in two ways. Divided as durga and atipriya it means, O god to whom a fort that is hard to enter is most dear. Divided as Durga and atipriya it means, O god most dear to Durga. In a verse built on a fort the first sense comes forward naturally, and many read the second as a pun kept deliberately in reserve.
Calling the senses gates is a fine choice. A fort must have gates, or it is a tomb. But the enemy also comes in by the gates. The Bhagavad Gita calls the body a city of nine gates (navadvare pure dehi, 5.13). The word ‘ghana’ here suggests that the senses are packed close together. In grammar ‘sthitah’ is masculine singular and agrees with ‘chayah’, the throng, not with the gates.
What the poet puts in the storehouse is not gold but learning. Depth, resolve, virtue, learning: none of these is a weapon, yet they are what keep the fort standing. The request is not for a day’s visit. ‘Nivasam kuru’ means take up residence for good. In the previous verse the limbs of the body asked for work, here the mind offers itself as a house, and in the next verse the same mind becomes a hunting forest. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
A wedding hall has several doors, and the family posts someone at each of them. Not only to receive the guests, but so that at least one person knows what is happening where.
Our attention has such doors too. Shutting off what comes in through the eyes and ears all day is neither possible nor wanted. It is enough to keep the kind of alertness that means someone is standing at the door.
