O Girisha, do not go wandering here and there, make your dwelling in me alone. O lord, O first hunter, in the border tracts of the dense forest that is my mind many deer are roaming in rut, and they are jealousy, delusion and the rest. Kill them, and you will have both the relish of the sport of hunting and the gain of it.
Context and commentary on verse 43
The mind here is a kantara, a forest thick enough to lose a path in. The verse looks not at its interior but at its simantara, the border tract where the forest ends and the fields begin. That is exactly where deer come to graze. Our faults are like that too. They do not sit hidden inside, they move about at the edge of our dealings. The word ‘madajusho’ works on two levels, the rut of animals and the pride of men.
Shiva is called adikirata, the first hunter. There are several stories of Shiva in a hunter’s guise, the best known being the Mahabharata episode in which he meets Arjuna as a kirata, which Bharavi’s Kiratarjuniya retells. Besides this, a deer in his hand is common in his images. So the picture of the hunt is not brought in from outside. It is already present in his own form.
The wit of the verse lies in its bargain. The poet does not ask to be purified. He holds out an inducement to Shiva: there is game enough here. A hunter goes where the animals are, and so the poet offers his own faults as the reason for Shiva to stay. It is worth noticing that both are named, sport and gain. The hunter gets his pleasure, and he also gets something to carry home.
It is worth noticing that jealousy is named first in the list. Unlike desire and anger it does not show outwardly but stays inside and works there, and many take that to be why it heads the list. Two places need sandhi undone: ‘mayyeva’ is mayi eva, and ‘svaminnadikirata’ is svamin adikirata. ‘Mohadaya’ at the end of the third line and ‘stan’ at the start of the fourth are joined, and are to be separated as matsaryamohadayah tan.
A run of four verses is under way here. In 42 the mind is a fort, here a forest, in the next a cave, and in 45 a nest in a tree. All of them are ways of offering Shiva a place to stay. A run of animals goes with it: deer here, and in the next verse an elephant, a tiger and a lion in the cave. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to the quarter.

At a bicycle repair shop we do not hide the trouble. We put a finger on the place that is making the noise, and show which brake is not holding. We know that nothing gets mended if we cover it up.
With our inner troubles we do this less often. We call envy a sense of fairness and attachment a sense of duty. Calling a thing by its own name is the first step, and that is what this verse is doing.
