ಶ್ಲೋಕ 52ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 52
The single image of this verse is rain. Shiva is the cloud and the devotee’s mind is the chataka bird. The convention of Sanskrit poetry holds that the chataka does not touch water on the ground and drinks only the drop that falls from the sky. It therefore appears in poetry as the mark of one who takes from a single source alone. This is a poetic convention rather than a statement of zoology. As soon as the mind is called a chataka the shape of the request changes, and its weight falls on there being no other support.
Every qualifier of the cloud serves for Shiva too. As ‘karunyamritavarshi’, the cloud pours water and Shiva pours compassion. In ‘ghanavipadgrishmachchhidakarmatha’ the word ‘ghana’ is itself the hinge of the two senses, meaning both thick and a cloud. If misfortune is the summer, what cuts it off is the rain. The word ‘karmatha’ is worth noticing, for it means one who stays at the work without letting go. This way of calling God a worker is not rare in the Shivananda Lahari.
The phrase ‘vidyasasyaphalodayaya’ carries the picture out into a field. A crop grows by rain, and learning bears fruit by grace. Vidya here is not only lessons but knowledge that includes the knowledge of the Self. In ‘sumanahsamsevya’, sumanas means people of good mind and also the gods. The word ‘ichchhakriti’ is, for the cloud, its way of taking any shape it likes in the sky, and for Shiva the freedom of assuming form by his own wish. Tradition holds that his appearances are not forced on him by past action.
The third line brings in the peacock, and not by accident. The peacock dances when the rains come, so the devotees who dance before the cloud have become peacocks. The next two verses develop this very picture. ‘Adrinilaya’ is, for the cloud, its way of settling on a hill, and for Shiva his dwelling on Kailasa or Srishaila. ‘Chanchajjatamandala’ shows at once the moving edge of a cloud in the wind and the circling of Shiva’s matted hair in the dance.
In its construction the whole verse is a single sentence. All the qualifiers of the first three lines stand in the accusative and attach to the one word ‘tvam’ in the last line. The subject arrives only at the end, ‘me manaschatakah’. The construction keeps a small distance: it is not I who long, it is my mind. The two vocatives ‘shambho’ and ‘nilakandhara’ both come in the final line. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
At five in the morning a line stands in front of the milk booth. The van has not come yet, and still everyone in the queue is looking at the end of the road. The bag is in hand and the change has been counted out beforehand.
The chataka’s waiting is of the same kind. When we know from which direction what we need will come, waiting does not become hard. Our restlessness grows when we do not know where to look.
