He is forward in the dance the female bee desires, he takes the ichor of the elephant, he delights in gleaming honey, he is filled with sound, his great body is black, he is held in honour even by the five arrowed Manmatha, his wings are good, and he moves in gardens of flowers. May that king of bees, the lord who dwells on Srishaila, now sport plainly before me in the lotus that is my own mind. The same words hold of Shiva: eager for the dance that Bhringi wishes for, breaker of the elephant’s pride, rejoicing in Madhava, himself the form of sound, of a great white body from the ash, standing on the side of the good, and moving in the groves of good minds.

Context and commentary on verse 51

The previous verse described the Mallikarjuna of Srigiri alongside a flower, and bees came into it around the flower. This verse brings that bee forward and builds the whole stanza on it. The qualifiers of the first three lines fit a great bee exactly, and fit the Shiva who dwells on Srishaila just as exactly. What comes at the end is one small request, that this king of bees may roam in the lotus which is the poet’s mind.

Each word can be set down on two sides at once. ‘Bhringi’ is the female bee, and the male bee is forward in the dance she desires. The same name belongs to Bhringi, the well known devotee of Shiva, so the sense that he is ready for the dance Bhringi wishes for comes out directly as well. ‘Karimadagrahi’ is, for the bee, its habit of going to the scent of an elephant’s ichor, and for Shiva the story of his breaking the pride of the elephant demon. In ‘sphuranmadhavahladah’, madhava means all three of what pertains to honey, the month of spring, and Vishnu. The bee’s delight is in honey, Shiva’s in Vishnu.

‘Nadayuta’ is the bee’s humming, and on Shiva’s side it is his being the very form of sound. If ‘mahasitavapuh’ is split as maha asita vapuh it gives a great black body, which is the bee’s. Split as maha sita vapuh it gives a white body smeared with ash, which is Shiva’s. Two colours lie hidden inside one point of sandhi. ‘Pancheshu’ is Manmatha of the five flower arrows, and it is a convention of poets that the string of his bow is a row of bees. On Shiva’s side it is Manmatha who holds him in honour. The other two words work in the same way: ‘satpaksha’ is a good wing and also the side of good people, and ‘sumanovana’ is a garden of flowers and also a garden of good minds.

There are two fine points in the closing request. The first is the phrase ‘madiye manorajive’, in the lotus that is my own mind. In earlier verses the mind came as a nest, a lake, a garden and a mansion, and here it has become the flower itself. Nobody can drag a bee in by force, and if there is honey it comes of its own accord. The second is the verb ‘viharatam’, which has the shape of a command but the sense of a prayer. And the word ‘sakshat’ puts weight on this being present before the eyes rather than in imagination.

Some hear in the word ‘bhramaradhipa’ an echo of the name of Bhramarambika, the goddess at Srisailam, and read on that basis that he is her lord. The verse does not spell the name out, so this can be held only as a possibility. The metre, as in the previous verse, is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth. Several of the verses that follow are in the same metre.

For life today

In summer the village well is cleaned out. Those who go down bring up the silt, the fallen leaves and the bucket that was lost. When the work is done nobody pours water into the well, the spring fills it by itself.

The request in this verse is of the same kind. Making the bee come is not in our hands, but keeping the mind a place worth coming to is the part of the work that is ours. The rest happens in its own time.
