Context and commentary on verse 56
This verse is the twin of the one before it. As there, the whole verse is a string of names in the dative, and only at the end comes a small sentence, seyam natih shambhave, this bow to Shambhu. The last line of both verses is the same, tandavasambhramaya jatine seyam natih shambhave. Where verse 55 has samyak, this one has sayam, and that is the whole difference. This is not a slip of repetition, it stands so in the text.
The names can be taken in their order. Nitya is one whom time does not touch. Trigunatma is he whose form is the three qualities, sattva, rajas and tamas. Both Samkhya and Vedanta hold that the whole working of the world is the play of these three, so the name marks Shiva as the lord of the whole of nature. Purajit is the conqueror of the three cities. Since pura is a town and the body too is commonly called a pura, many also take it as the conqueror of the fort that is the body.
Katyayani is one of Parvati’s names, and tradition connects it with the line of the sage Katyayana. Her shreyas, her good and her wealth, is Shiva himself. The word that follows, adikutumbin, the first householder, is worth pausing over. Calling the great ascetic the first family man suits the manner of this hymn. Shiva’s house means Parvati, the two sons, the ganas, the bull and the snake, a whole household. Readers also take it to mean that Shiva and Shakti are the first couple of the world.
There is a fine point in munimanah pratyakshachinmurti. In Indian logic pratyaksha is what is seen directly and anumana is what is inferred from a sign. To the minds of sages Shiva is not a matter of inference but of direct sight. Besides, mayasrishtajagattraya calls creation the work of maya, which is to say that the maker is not stuck to it. Amnaya is the Veda, and its end is the Upanishad. He who moves at the end of all the Vedas is he who is found by searching in Vedanta.
Sayam tandava in the last line is the evening dance. Shaiva tradition links Shiva’s dance with the pradosha hour, the time when the sun goes down. Sambhrama is festive stir and a kind of hurry, so what is shown is not a Shiva standing in a picture but a Shiva in motion. Seyam is sa and iyam run together, that same this, meaning this bow of mine which you already know. Counting the syllables gives nineteen to a quarter, which is shardulavikridita.

For life today
For those standing in the queue at a ration shop, what remains of them at the table inside is a card number and a thumb impression. The same person is someone else at home, someone else on the street, and another name again on a hospital record.
The verse calls one being by a dozen names and gathers them all into a single bow. We tend to fix the people around us by the name of one job they do for us. Remembering that they carry other names as well is a small courtesy.
