Striking the chest of Yama, crushing the hard Apasmara underfoot, roaming over the mountains, bearing the rub of the crowns on the heads of the gods who bow: is this work fitting at all for your soft pair of feet? O Shambhu, accept for ever the walking about in the jewelled sandals that are my mind.
Context and commentary on verse 64
The tone of the verse is what to notice. The devotee is worrying here about Shiva’s feet, as one worries about the feet of an elder at home. To speak of the god’s weariness instead of putting a request to him is one of the fine turns of this work. He counts four tasks, asks whether they suit those soft feet, and at the end offers the one thing he has, his mind, as a pair of sandals.
The four tasks are these. The first is the kick on Yama’s chest, and tradition tells how Shiva struck Death while protecting Markandeya. The second is the pressing down of Apasmara, the small figure that lies under the foot in images of the dancing Shiva. The third is the roaming of the mountains, which holds both the dwelling on Kailasa and the wandering of the hunt. Since bhubhrit can also mean a king, some read it as going the rounds of kings, though the main sense is the mountain. In the fourth the poet’s wit is plain. When the gods bow, the hard edges of their crowns rub against those feet, so even worship is a burden to them.
A word is needed plainly about the term apasmara. In Sanskrit and in Ayurveda apasmara names the disorder in which awareness is lost, what medicine today calls epilepsy, a condition arising from disturbed electrical activity in the brain. In the verse and in the science of images it is the name of a demon, which tradition reads as the figure of heedlessness and lost awareness. It should not be taken as a remark about people who have the condition. There are effective medicines for it today, they are to be used on a doctor’s advice, and reciting a verse is not a substitute for treatment.
The offering in the last quarter fits the whole stand of this work. Instead of a flower or a seat, the devotee gives his mind as a pair of sandals, because what the Shivananda Lahari has been asking from the beginning is that the mind should stay at those feet. A sandal does two things, it protects the foot and it marks respect. The word viharana is not standing but walking about, so what the devotee asks is that his mind be always in use. The paduka of the previous verse was a hunter’s worn sandal, and this paduka is of jewels, one word raised in two verses from the very lowest place to the very highest.
Two points about the construction. The four long compounds of the first two quarters all go with karma idam, so the four are counted together as one piece of work. In the question kim va uchitam the small word va softens the question and keeps it from becoming a complaint. The single imperative angikuru carries the request of the whole verse. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

In a photo studio, before the picture is taken they have us stand on the mark on the floor, set the height of the stool to our height, and give a small support so that the neck is not bent. None of this shows in the photograph.
What is in our power is small adjustments of this kind, which set another’s standing place a little more right. What the devotee of the verse offers is a support of just that kind, his own mind as a padding for the feet.
