Ah, what is it that devotion does not do? A man who roams the forest becomes the very crest ornament of devotees.
Context and commentary on verse 63
Tradition connects this verse with the story of the hunter devotee of Kalahasti. The verse itself names nobody and says only ‘a forest dweller’, so it is right to say plainly that the connection belongs to the tradition of its readers. The story of this devotee comes in the line of the Nayanars of the Tamil Shaiva tradition, and the Periya Puranam of Chekkilar tells it at length. It relates that a hunter named Tinnan came upon a linga in the forest and took it for his own god, and that he was afterwards called Kannappa because he offered his own eyes. Kalahasti is in what is now Andhra Pradesh, and is spoken of as the shrine of air among the five shrines of the elements.
Three things in the story are caught in the three quarters of the verse. He moved the dead leaves off the linga with the sandal he had walked the forest in, he bathed it by sprinkling water he had carried in his mouth, and he offered meat that he had tasted a little of to be sure it was good. By the strict rules of worship all three are faults. Footwear is impure, water that has been in the mouth is leavings, and meat that has been in the mouth is more so. The verse does not deny those rules. It says that where there is devotion all three become something else. The position taken is that the inner feeling decides the worth of the act.
The work of the words does the same thing. Kurchayate, abhishekayate, upaharayate, avatamsayate: all four are verbs made from nouns, what grammar calls a naamadhaatu. Their sense is ‘behaves as that’, ‘serves as that’. Because the same sound falls again at the end of all four quarters, an insistence is heard in the verse, as though to say it becomes, it becomes, it becomes. A kurcha is the tuft used as a brush to wipe an image clean, so the sandal rises to the place of that brush. An avatamsa is an ornament for the head or the ear, so the hunter becomes the jewel on the head of the whole company of devotees.
Two small questions of reading remain. Many take margavartita as the sandal worn down by walking the road, and some as the sandal turned over in the hand to push the litter off the linga. Both come to the same picture, a thing of the foot becoming an implement of worship. Besides, the exclamation kim na karoti aho is the hinge of the verse: having given three examples, the poet asks a question and leaves the answer to the reader.
The place of this verse is worth noticing too. The two before it spoke of what devotion is and how it tends its own, and this one puts forward the evidence of a life. That the evidence comes through a man who had read no scripture, knew no mantra and lived by hunting in the forest gives it more force. The next verse returns to Shiva’s feet, and there the same word paduka comes back in another way. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth.

In a barber’s shop the edge of the mirror is chipped, the arm of the chair is worn and the cloth put over the shoulders is old. In the small mirror held up at the back at the end, the work looks neat.
