ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
O Shambhu, you create this whole spread out world for the sake of play, and all people are your playthings. Whatever act I do comes about for your pleasure. My own restless doings are certainly the instrument of your curiosity. Therefore, O Pashupati, the guarding of me is work that must be done by you.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 66ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 66
The verse is built in the shape of an argument. The first quarter lays down a position: the world is your play and people are your playthings. The second applies it to the speaker himself: what I do also happens for your pleasure. The third presses the point with ‘nishchitam’, certainly, and the last opens with ‘tasmat’, therefore, and draws the conclusion. Yat, tat, nishchitam, tasmat and eva are the words of reasoning, and the poet uses them deliberately, turning a plea into a short piece of argument.
The word ‘krida’, play, is the ground of the verse. No lack in the lord is the cause of creation, which is mere play: this is said in both the Shaiva and the Vedanta traditions. The Brahma Sutra phrase ‘lokavattu lilakaivalyam’ states the same position, that it is as play is in the world, with no further purpose. There is a consolation in the word play, and also a sting. Because it is play, the rise and fall of the world has no final seriousness, but the one who is the plaything has no choice of part either.
A play of words runs through this. People are called ‘kridamriga’, the animals of his sport, and mriga means an animal, while one of Shiva’s names is Pashupati, lord of animals. If we are the animals of the first quarter, then by the address of the last quarter you are our herdsman, and the argument that keeping us is your work follows of itself. In Shaiva teaching pashu means the soul bound by its fetters and pati the one who can loosen them. Against that background the address is not a mere name but the joint on which the verse turns.
The word ‘mamakarakshanam’ carries two senses. Mamaka means mine, so it is both the guarding of me and the guarding of all that is mine. ‘Kutuhala’, curiosity, is bolder still. In saying that his own struggling is the instrument by which Shiva satisfies his curiosity, there is the note of a child saying that you made me this way. It need not be taken as a licence for wrongdoing. Many read it as a surrender of the sense of being the sole doer.
Unlike several of the verses before it, this one does not rest in describing Shiva’s greatness but ends by placing a request. Besides, it is the last of the run of long verses in this stretch. The metre is shardulavikridita, nineteen syllables to a quarter with a pause after the twelfth. From the next verse onward the quarters grow shorter, so the pace of reading changes as well.
ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
In a puppet show at a fair every movement is the work of the hand above. If a string snaps the show stops, and the one who works the puppets sits down and knots it himself. There is no question of scolding the puppet.
Being called someone’s puppet sounds belittling at first. Yet there is a consolation in it as well, the consolation of not having written everything ourselves. We can set the weight down a little and do only the part that is ours.
