ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
It is a lovely ground of enjoyment, made beautiful by floods of tears that come of many kinds of delight and marked with open thrills of the skin. Those who long for the fruit that is the lasting state make it their service. In that contemplation of the supreme Sadashiva I take my refuge.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 67ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 67
The previous verse argued its case and placed a request. This one quietly states a resolve. The whole verse has a single finite verb, ‘prapadye’, I take refuge. Everything else consists of qualifiers of the one word ‘bhavanam’, three long compounds. So the sentence does not come to rest until the final word, and there is a kind of waiting in that delay.
‘Bhavana’ does not mean mere imagining. It is the settling of one thought in the mind again and again, and the work of that settling is itself bhavana. Yoga and Vedanta both use the word in this sense. The fineness here is that the refuge taken is not a place or an image but a thought. Shelter has become a state of mind. The word ‘prapadye’ is the root of prapatti and sharanagati, the vocabulary of self surrender.
‘Bhogabhumi’ ordinarily names a land where pleasures are enjoyed. When we look for the riches of this land, they turn out to be tears and gooseflesh, so the verse has reversed the reckoning of pleasure. Tears, the rising of the hair on the skin and a voice choking with feeling are named by tradition as the outward marks of devotion. Seen medically too, these are responses of the body that do not obey the will, and so they cannot be produced to order. The word ‘sphuta’ says that they are too plain to be hidden.
Two things lie in the phrase ‘chirapadaphalakankshisevyamanam’. Chirapada means the state that abides for ever, that is, liberation, and it can also mean a rank that lasts long. Several earlier verses turned away fruits like heaven that soon come to an end, and this phrase sits naturally in that line of thought. Besides, ‘sevyamanam’ offers a small comfort: this contemplation is not the poet’s discovery, for many before him have made it their service.
The metre changes with this verse. The odd quarters have twelve syllables and the even ones thirteen, so this is a half equal metre, the one called pushpitagra. After the nineteen syllables of the previous verse it sounds short. Verse 68 is in the same metre, so the two are best read together to catch the gait.

At a concert, when the singer holds a note and lets it go slowly, the eyes of someone in the front row fill. That person is not weeping, and those tears were not summoned.
We cannot command responses of that kind. What is in our hands is going back, again and again, to whatever moves us. The rest looks after itself.
