O god, dullness, beastliness, being stained and crooked ways are not in me. And if they are, O you whose crest is the moon, am I not then a fit vessel for your ornament?
Context and commentary on verse 69
The verse moves in two steps. The first half counts up four faults and says they are not in me. The second half turns with ‘asti yadi’, if they are, and smiles. The life of the verse is in that turn. Usually a fault takes away one’s fitness, and here the fault becomes the fitness itself.
The wordplay of the verse is that these four words name the very things Shiva carries. Jada is what does not move and what is cold, and that suits both the cool moon on his head and the water in his hair. Pashu is an animal, and Shiva is Pashupati, with an animal’s skin on his body and the bull before him. Kalanka is a dark spot, and that is the spot on the moon. Kutilachara is what moves crookedly, and that is the snake at his throat and the winding Ganga. So the list of faults is also the list of Shiva’s ornaments.
The poet has made a small preparation for this play on words. In the address ‘rajamaule’, rajan means the moon and mauli the crown, so the moon is placed exactly where the mention of the spot needs it. In the same way ‘patra’ has two senses, a vessel or holder and a worthy person. So the line can be read as asking to be worn as the ornament itself, and also as claiming to be the fit recipient of the ornament he gives.
Behind the verse lies something about Shiva’s nature. The ash of the burning ground, snakes, poison and a crowd of spirits, all that the world keeps at a distance, he has taken to himself. Many therefore read the verse as building a case for the belief that he wears as an ornament what the world has refused. It is also a piece of modesty. The manner of first denying a fault and then conceding it with a smile is familiar in hymn literature.
The quarters of this verse are not equal in the number of syllables. By our count they have ten, thirteen, eight and twelve. It is therefore not a metre counted by syllables but one counted by morae, and the two halves come to about thirty morae each. We do not name the metre here, and can say only that this verse is shorter than the ones before and after it. The short gait suits the brevity of its wit.
