In privacy and in the open alike, he is easy to come by for one who would serve him by his own free thought, and his form is gracious. He gives fruit beyond counting, he is greater than the world, and he is my lord. That king, who wears the moon on his crown, is present in my heart.

ಶ್ಲೋಕ 70ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 70

This verse is not a request but the statement of a state. The poet who asked for protection in verse 66 and for a guard in verse 68 here stops asking altogether. All the qualifiers of the verse come to rest in one short verb, ‘asti’, he is. Read in sequence, these five verses show a slope that runs from argument to surrender and from surrender to a settled quiet.

The pair ‘arahasi rahasi’ is finely made. Both stand in the locative, each denies the other, and taken together they mean anywhere at all. The verse says that Shiva is equally available to worship done in secret and to worship done before others. An earlier verse told the mind to sport in privacy, so the phrase here does not cancel that but widens it.

The word ‘svatantrabuddhya’ draws attention. It means that service is possible by one’s own thought, without waiting for another’s sanction and without the requirement of a fixed procedure. This is not a disparagement of observance. Many read it as a comfort, that the way is not closed to those who lack the means for observance. ‘Varivasitum’, to serve, is a rare word that comes from the old term varivasya. ‘Prasannamurti’ can mean one who is well disposed and also one whose form stands clear before meditation.

The last two epithets support each other. ‘Aganitaphaladayakah’ is the giver of fruit beyond counting and ‘jagadadhikah’ is the one who exceeds the world. Because the giver is greater than the world, his giving admits of no count, which is a small piece of reasoning. ‘Rajashekhara’ carries two senses, he who wears the moon on his crown, and the king who wears a crown. The ‘rajamaule’ of the previous verse and the ‘rajashekhara’ here bring the same picture twice, so the two verses stand hand in hand.

In the closing words ‘hridi asti’ the heart becomes the king’s capital. In the earlier part of the hymn the poet called the mind a nest, a mansion and a garden, and this continues that line. The metre is pushpitagra, as in verses 67 and 68, with twelve syllables in the odd quarters and thirteen in the even. Only verse 69, which stands between them, is in a different metre, so these three verses share one gait.

ಆಧಾರ: ಹಲವು ಮೂಲಗಳು. ವ್ಯಾಖ್ಯಾನಕಾರರ ಅಭಿಪ್ರಾಯ ಭಿನ್ನವಾಗಿರುವಲ್ಲಿ ಎರಡೂ ಅರ್ಥಗಳನ್ನು ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಕೊಟ್ಟಿದ್ದೇವೆ.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today

At four in the morning the sound of a broom is heard in the street. Nobody is watching and nobody is praising. After daybreak the same work goes on in front of everyone, and its quality does not change.

What truly matters to us we do even when no one is watching. Once that becomes a habit, inside and outside no longer stay two separate places.
