- ಭವಿತುಮೀಶ್ವರಪಾದಪದ್ಮ (भवितुमीश्वरपादपद्म, bhavitumīśvarapādapadma) = ಈಶ್ವರನ ಪಾದಕಮಲ (ಸಂಧಿ: ಭವಿತುಮ್ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಈಶ್ವರಪಾದಪದ್ಮ) (the lotus feet of the Lord (sandhi: bhavitum joined with ishvarapadapadma))
- ಸಕ್ತಾ (सक्ता, saktā) = ಅಂಟಿಕೊಂಡವಳಾಗಿ, ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾಗಿ ಹಿಡಿದವಳಾಗಿ (clinging, holding fast)
- ವಧೂರ್ವಿರಹಿಣೀವ (वधूर्विरहिणीव, vadhūrvirahiṇīva) = ಗಂಡನಿಂದ ಅಗಲಿದ ಹೆಂಡತಿಯಂತೆ (ವಧೂ: ಹೆಂಡತಿ, ವಿರಹಿಣೀ: ಅಗಲಿಕೆಯ ಸಂಕಟದಲ್ಲಿರುವವಳು) (like a wife parted from her husband (vadhu is a wife, virahini one in the pain of separation))

- ಶಿವಮಂತ್ರಜಪೇನ (शिवमन्त्रजपेन, śivamantrajapena) = ಶಿವಮಂತ್ರದ ಜಪದಿಂದ (by the japa of Shiva’s mantra)
- ವಿಂತೇ (विन्ते, vinte) = ಪಡೆಯುತ್ತದೆ, ಕಂಡುಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ (it finds, it obtains)
For the intellect to become steady it must cling to the lotus feet of the Lord and remember him always, like a wife parted from her husband. Joined with right feeling, remembrance, seeing, singing and the rest, the japa of Shiva’s mantra leaves it as though entranced. Only then does that intellect find its footing.
ಶ್ಲೋಕ 77ರ ವಿವರಣೆContext and commentary on verse 77
The build of the verse has to be taken apart first. ‘Bhavitum’ is an infinitive, in order to become. So the verse is not saying that the intellect is steady but what it must do in order to become steady. The three forms ‘sakta’, ‘smaranti’ and ‘sammohita’ are all feminine, because buddhi is a feminine noun in Sanskrit, and it is that point of grammar which opens the way to the simile that follows.
The simile is that of a wife in separation. Her remembering is not a task she sits down to do. While cooking, while walking, in the middle of sleep, her mind returns there of itself. That is the quality of remembrance the verse asks for, a remembrance that will not let go rather than one held by effort. Viraha, separation, is one of the great moods of Sanskrit poetry, and Shankara turns it here towards devotion.
After the four, right feeling, remembrance, seeing and singing, stands the word ‘adi’, and the rest. Tradition recalls here the well-known list of nine kinds of devotion in the Bhagavata: hearing, singing, remembering, service of the feet, worship, salutation, servitude, friendship and the offering of oneself. The verse does not take up the whole list. It names four and leaves the others under ‘adi’.
There is a fine point in the pair ‘sammohita iva’. Moha, delusion, is usually a fault in Vedanta. Here the same word comes in a good sense, and the small word ‘iva’ is placed carefully. The verse does not say the intellect is deluded but that it is as one entranced. The repetition of japa carries the mind into a kind of absorption, and to anyone watching from outside that looks much like being spellbound.
The closing form ‘vinte’ does not yield easily. Many take it as an atmanepada form of the root vid, to find, with the intellect itself as subject, so that it is the intellect that obtains. Some editions carry the reading ‘vinde’, I obtain. The pith is the same either way: steadiness is not constructed but come upon. The metre is that of the previous verse, fourteen syllables to a quarter, in the arrangement of vasantatilaka.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
At the change of shift in a hospital, nurses walk from bed to bed and hand over. This one had a fever this morning, this one has not slept, this one’s line must be checked at ten. The same sentences come round three times a day, and it is that repetition which keeps someone’s story from being lost along the way.
Our own remembering lasts in the same way. A thing settles in the mind only through our returning to it again and again. The steadiness this verse asks for does not arrive all at once either. It grows out of one small remembrance that keeps coming back through the day.
