Devotion, dwelling in the lotus that is Mahesha’s foot, pours down a rain of satisfaction like a bank of clouds. The man whose mind-tank is filled by that rain sees the whole crop of his life bear fruit. Nothing else bears fruit.
Context and commentary on verse 76
The verse lays out an entire farming year in order. First the source of water, which is the lotus that is Shiva’s foot. Devotion dwelling there rises and becomes cloud. The cloud rains satisfaction. The rain fills the tank that is the mind. The tank waters the crop that is this birth. Lotus, cloud, rain, tank, crop, fruit: leave out one of these six steps and the chain breaks.
There is a play in the word ‘pushkara’, which means a lotus and also a place holding water. So it reads at once that devotion lives in the lotus of Shiva’s foot and that it stands as water in the pool that is that foot. A cloud draws its water from the pool below, and it is the same water it returns as rain. The inner sense of the picture is that what we place at the feet is what falls back upon us.
The word ‘sampurita’ deserves notice. It is not somewhat filled but filled to the bund. A half-full tank waters only part of the fields below it, and that is why ‘akhilam’ follows: not a share of the crop but the whole of it. Saphala means both bearing fruit and having served its purpose, and the verse holds both senses together.
There is a restraint in calling a birth a crop. A crop has its season, it is harvested once, and a season in which the rain failed does not come back. The two closing words ‘cha nanyat’ sound a little hard. They need not be read as a slight on other paths. Many take them as a farmer’s plain remark, that without water there is no crop.
Verses 71 to 75 took up the occupations of the world one by one. This verse takes the farmer of that series up once more, but now from the side of the water. The next two verses turn towards the intellect. A word about the metre. Each quarter has fourteen syllables, and the arrangement of long and short is that of vasantatilaka.

For life today
The day after the first rain, standing on the bund of a tank, we cannot tell at a glance how far the water has risen. The gauge shows so many millimetres for the day. It is those small figures, adding one upon another, that fill the tank.
Our own filling goes on in the same way. One day’s prayer seems to change nothing. But once the tank is full, all the fields below it turn green together, and the change that was invisible until then comes into sight.
