O destroyer of the cities, with the goad of courage and the chain of devotion draw in the rutting elephant that is my heart, quietly and yet with force. With the machines of awareness, bind it to the tethering post that is your foot.
Context and commentary on verse 96
Every word of this verse comes from the language of those who keep elephants. An ankusha is the hook the mahout holds, a shrinkhala is the chain put on the foot, an alana is the post driven into the ground to tether the animal, and yantra here means the contrivances that hold it in place. To those four implements the verse fits four inward things: courage, devotion, Shiva’s foot and awareness.
‘Nibhritam’ and ‘rabhasat’ stand in the same breath. The first means quietly, holding back, and the second quickly, without a pause. On the face of it the two pull against each other, but this is just how one who handles an elephant works: no shouting, and no hesitation either. The verse suggests that the training of the mind is work of the same kind.
In the compound ‘hridaya-mada-ibha’ the word mada carries the weight. A bull elephant in rut is at its strongest, and also at its least predictable. In that state the animal is not killed but tethered and kept. The address ‘Purahara’ sits well here too, since one who brought down the three cities will not find the fortress of the mind too much for him.
The last word is ‘cidyantraih’, with the machines of awareness. Cit is the power of knowing, and the choice of word says that the final tying must be done by knowing rather than by force. The place of tying, moreover, is Shiva’s foot. The image of the foot that has run through the whole work stands here as the tethering post, and the next verse carries the same elephant forward with the talk of a rope.
As to the metre: this is counted not by syllables but by morae. Counting them gives twelve and eighteen in the first half, and twelve and eighteen again in the second. Within the arya family, a verse whose two halves are each of thirty morae is called giti, and the count here fits that arrangement.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
Anyone who has watched a temple elephant knows it. The keeper walks beside the animal, a word now and then, a light touch. A creature of that strength turns at so small a sign, and that is not the work of one day but of years of being together.
Our dealings with our own mind may be like that. Pressed down by force it pushes out somewhere else. A small sign given in the same direction every day, a practice kept at the same hour, works slowly and works better.
