O lord of Bhavani, my feet are very soft and your mind very hard. Give up your doubt about that, O Shiva. For otherwise, how did you come to make your dwelling on a mountain?
Context and commentary on verse 95
The verse turns on the two senses of one word, kathina: hard to the touch, and hard of heart. The poet holds both in a single line, saying, my feet are soft and your mind is hard, and for evidence he points to where Shiva lives. One who has settled on a hill of rock cannot plead that his mind is soft. The wit lies in making like keep company with like.
‘Santyaja’ is a second person imperative, so it is Shiva who is asked to let the doubt go. This is taken in two ways. On the first, the sense is, what I said is true, do not doubt it, your dwelling on the hill is the proof. On the second, many readers take vichikitsa to be Shiva’s own hesitation over whether to grant his grace, and then the prayer is that he should set that hesitation aside. The first reading fits the play of the verse better.
Feet have been spoken of before in this work. Verse seventy nine said of Shiva’s own foot that it is soft enough to move on the petal of the lotus that is a yogin’s mind, and asked how it then struck the hard breast of Yama. There the soft thing was Shiva’s foot. Here it is the devotee’s. Behind the complaint it is natural to hear the experience of hill shrines that must be climbed on foot, whether Kailasa or any temple reached by a stony path.
For ‘veshah’ we have taken the sense of entering in or dwelling, from the root vish, which suits the place. The same word can also mean dress or garb, and then the line would ask how such a garb came to be on the mountain, but that does not sit well with the rest. Notice too the addresses: he calls out twice, first as lord of Bhavani and then as Shiva. Since the complaint keeps calling him by name, it is not an angry complaint but a familiar one.
As to the metre: this verse keeps the measure of the one before it. The quarters have ten, twelve, nine and twelve syllables, and by morae twelve, eighteen, twelve and eighteen, counting a short final syllable as long. That measure is giti, of the arya class. It is the mark of this kind of metre that the syllable count varies from quarter to quarter while the count of morae stays the same.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.
For life today
The stone step of an old temple is worn low and smooth in the middle. A foot is softer than stone, yet it is the stone that has given way. That was not done by one or two feet but by the thousands that came and went over years.
Given time, what is soft bends even what is hard. With someone at home who has taken offence, it is the small dealings of each day that work, rather than one large conversation. The complaint in the verse carries the same trust: he calls the mind hard and goes on asking all the same.
