O supreme Shiva, ocean of compassion, was this fitting of you? In the hope of seeing your foot and your head, Hari and Brahma took the forms of a beast and a bird, and wandered weary through the sky and over the earth. O Shambhu, O master, tell me how you may be known by me, standing here in front of me.
Context and commentary on verse 99
The verse recalls a story from the Puranas. When Shiva stood as a pillar of light without end, two set out to find its top and its base. Vishnu went down in the form of a boar in search of the foot, and Brahma went up in the form of a swan in search of the head, and tradition says that neither found the end. The single word ‘padashirodarshanadhiya’ divides the errand between them, the foot to one and the head to the other.
The tone of the verse, though, is not narration but question. ‘Idam te yuktam va’, was this becoming of you, the poet asks. His charge is that two of the greatest gods were left to take animal bodies and to tire themselves out. It is worth noticing that the address ‘ocean of compassion’ is set right beside the charge. Calling him compassion itself and then asking whether he showed any is an old move in the literature of devotion.
Tiryak means going crosswise, and it is the word for the creatures that do not stand upright as human beings do. What was not found by the one who went high or the one who went deep, the poet asks for in front of himself. In the last line the charge turns into a request, kathaya, tell me. That what the search above and below could not reach is met with when one stands still before him is what the work has been saying all along.
One or two points of grammar. The three dual forms ‘gatau’, ‘carantau’ and ‘shramayutau’ all go with ‘haribrahmanau’. ‘Vedyah’ is the form meaning fit to be known, and the genitive ‘mama’ does the work of an agent there, fit to be known by me. The last line is read in two ways: as a request, tell me how you may be known by me here in front, and as wonder, how is it that you, whom they could not find, are within my knowing right here?
As to the metre: there are seventeen syllables in each quarter, with a pause after the sixth. That arrangement is the one called shikharini. It was the metre of the opening verses of the work, so near the close the old gait returns.
Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

On a night when the power has gone, two people in a house look for the torch. One gropes along the top of a cupboard, the other bends to look under the bed. When it turns up at last, they find that it was in one of their own hands the whole time.
Many of our searches are like that. The effort of going far to look is real enough, but what is wanted is often close by. Stopping the search for a moment and looking at our own hands is sometimes all that is needed.
