  • ಸ್ತೋತ್ರೇಣಾಲಮಹಂ (स्तोत्रेणालमहं, stotreṇālamahaṃ) = ಸ್ತೋತ್ರ ಸಾಕು, ನಾನು (ಸ್ತೋತ್ರೇಣ, ಅಲಂ ಮತ್ತು ಅಹಂ ಸಂಧಿಯಾಗಿವೆ) (enough of hymning, and I (stotrena, alam and aham joined by sandhi))
(I speak)
  • ನ ಮೃಷಾ (न मृषा, na mṛṣā) = ಸುಳ್ಳಲ್ಲ (not falsely)

  • ವಿರಿಂಚಾದಯಃ (विरिञ्चादयः, viriñcādayaḥ) = ಬ್ರಹ್ಮ ಮುಂತಾದವರು (ವಿರಿಂಚಿ: ಬ್ರಹ್ಮನ ಹೆಸರು) (Brahma and the rest (Virinchi: a name of Brahma))

  • ಗಣನಾಪ್ರಸಂಗಸಮಯೇ (गणनाप्रसङ्गसमये, gaṇanāprasaṅgasamaye) = ಎಣಿಸುವ ಪ್ರಸಂಗ ಬಂದ ಹೊತ್ತಿನಲ್ಲಿ (at the time when the counting comes up)

  • ಧಾನಾತುಷಸ್ತೋಮವತ್ (धानातुषस्तोमवत्, dhānātuṣastomavat) = ಕಾಳಿನಿಂದ ಬೇರ್ಪಟ್ಟ ಹೊಟ್ಟಿನ ರಾಶಿಯಂತೆ (ಧಾನಾ: ಕಾಳು, ತುಷ: ಹೊಟ್ಟು, ಸ್ತೋಮ: ರಾಶಿ) (like a heap of husk parted from the grain (dhana: grain, tusha: husk, stoma: a heap))

Enough of hymning. I do not speak falsely. When the occasion comes for counting those worthy of praise, the gods beginning with Brahma know you as the first to be counted. In the enquiry into who stands foremost in greatness, they themselves are winnowed away like a heap of husk from the grain, and your servants, O Shambhu, know you as the highest of high fruits.

Context and commentary on verse 100

The first words are ‘stotrena alam’, enough of the hymn. Alam with the instrumental means this much is enough, and the verse turns as if to say, I shall stop praising and state a fact. With it comes a guard: ‘na mrisha pravacmi’, I do not speak falsely. What follows, the poet says, is not his own opinion, and he turns the witness over to others, to the gods themselves.

The next image comes from the threshing floor. Dhana is grain, tusha is husk, stoma is a heap. When grain is winnowed in the wind the husk blows away and the grain stays. The verse says that in an enquiry into greatness the others blow away like that and Shiva alone remains as the grain. The word ‘phala’ at the close keeps the same picture, for what remains is the substance.

The statement need not be read as disparaging other gods. In the literature of praise it is a convention to set one’s own deity above all others, and the device has a name, utkarsha. Besides, in the Advaita view all deities are forms of the one reality, so many readers take what is winnowed away here to be not the gods but the habit of counting itself. Nor should it be forgotten that those same gods are the verse’s first witnesses.

There are two kinds of knowers in the verse. The gods know Shiva as agraganya, first in the count. The servants know him as the highest of high fruits, that is, as the substance that has come into their hands. The distance between the two kinds of knowing is large, and the verse ends not with the testimony of the gods but with the words ‘bhavat sevakah’, your servants. That the last words of a hundred verses should be your servants is not an accident.

As to the metre: there are nineteen syllables in each quarter, with a pause after the twelfth. That arrangement is shardulavikridita, the metre that came again and again through the middle of the work, so the work ends in the voice it used most. What the hundred verses have done is this much: they have brought a wandering mind to a foot, and set it down there.

Sources: several. Where commentators differ, both readings are given here.

For life today

When the last page of a notebook comes, the writing hand slows a little. Knowing that the room left is small, the lines written there grow shorter, and only what matters stays.

The end of our own work is a winnowing of the same kind. A great deal of talk and a great deal of preparation blows away, and one or two lines remain. What we choose to write on the last page tells us plainly what we hold to be important.
