ದೇವರ ಮುಂದೆ ಕರ್ಪೂರಕ್ಕೆ ಬೆಂಕಿ ಇಟ್ಟ ಕ್ಷಣ ಮನೆ ತುಂಬಾ ಪರಿಮಳ ಹರಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಅದು ಸುಡುವುದಕ್ಕೆ ಮೊದಲು ಅಷ್ಟು ಪರಿಮಳ ಇರಲಿಲ್ಲ.
ಆ ಒಂದು ಕ್ಷಣವನ್ನು ಈ ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಒಂದು ಹೋಲಿಕೆಯಾಗಿ ಎತ್ತಿಕೊಳ್ಳುತ್ತದೆ. ಅನುಷ್ಟುಪ್ ಛಂದಸ್ಸಿನ ಮೊದಲ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಮಾತು ಇದೆ, ಎರಡನೆಯ ಅರ್ಧದಲ್ಲಿ ಅದರ ಸಾಕ್ಷಿ ಇದೆ.
ಸುಭಾಷಿತ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಸ್ವಭಾವಂ ನ ಜಹಾತ್ಯೇವ ಸಾಧುರಾಪದ್ಗತೋಽಪಿ ಸನ್ ।
ಕರ್ಪೂರಃ ಪಾವಕಸ್ಪೃಷ್ಟಃ ಸೌರಭಂ ಲಭತೇತರಾಮ್ ॥

स्वभावं न जहात्येव साधुरापद्गतोऽपि सन् ।

ಪದಶಃ ಅರ್ಥ
- ಸ್ವಭಾವಮ್ (स्वभावम्, svabhāvam) = ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು (his own nature)
- ನ (न, na) = ಇಲ್ಲ (not)
- ಜಹಾತಿ (जहाति, jahāti) = ಬಿಡುವುದು (let go)
- ಏವ (एव, eva) = ಎಂದಿಗೂ (at all)
- ಸಾಧುಃ (साधुः, sādhuḥ) = ಸಜ್ಜನ (the good man)
- ಆಪದ್ಗತಃ (आपद्गतः, āpadgataḥ) = ಕಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕವನಾಗಿ (fallen into trouble)
- ಅಪಿ (अपि, api) = ಆಗಿದ್ದೂ (even)
- ಸನ್ (सन्, san) = ಇದ್ದೂ (being so)
- ಕರ್ಪೂರಃ (कर्पूरः, karpūraḥ) = ಕರ್ಪೂರ (camphor)

ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಕನ್ನಡ)
ಕಷ್ಟಕ್ಕೆ ಸಿಕ್ಕಿದ್ದರೂ ಸಜ್ಜನ ತನ್ನ ಸ್ವಭಾವವನ್ನು ಬಿಡುವುದೇ ಇಲ್ಲ. ಬೆಂಕಿ ಮುಟ್ಟಿದ ಕರ್ಪೂರ ಇನ್ನೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಪರಿಮಳವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ.
ಸಂಪೂರ್ಣ ಅರ್ಥ (ಇಂಗ್ಲಿಷ್)
The good man does not let go of his nature, not even when he has fallen into trouble. Camphor touched by fire yields its fragrance all the more.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
ಲಭತೇತರಾಮ್ ಎಂಬಲ್ಲಿ ತರಾಮ್ ಎಂಬುದು ಕ್ರಿಯಾಪದಕ್ಕೇ ಹತ್ತಿದ ಪ್ರತ್ಯಯ. ಇದು ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಎಂಬ ಅರ್ಥವನ್ನು ಕೊಡುತ್ತದೆ. ಲಭತೇ ಇತರಾಮ್ ಎಂದು ಒಡೆಯುವುದು ತಪ್ಪು.
In labhatetaram the suffix taram is attached to the finite verb itself and gives the sense of a higher degree. Splitting it as labhate itaram would be a mistake.
ಪಾವಕ ಎಂದರೆ ಶುದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸುವುದು, ಬೆಂಕಿಯ ಒಂದು ಹೆಸರು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ಆ ಹೆಸರಿನ ಆಯ್ಕೆ ಸಡಿಲವಲ್ಲ. ಕಷ್ಟವನ್ನು ಸುಡುವುದು ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಅಲ್ಲ, ಶುದ್ಧಗೊಳಿಸುವುದು ಎಂದೂ ಸೂಚಿಸಿದಂತಾಯಿತು.
Pavaka, the purifier, is one of the names of fire. The choice of that name here is not loose. It lets adversity be not merely what burns but what purifies.
ಕರ್ಪೂರದ ಚಿತ್ರದಲ್ಲಿ ಒಂದು ಕಠಿಣ ಸತ್ಯವೂ ಇದೆ. ಕರ್ಪೂರ ಉಳಿಯುವುದಿಲ್ಲ, ಬೂದಿಯನ್ನೂ ಬಿಡುವುದಿಲ್ಲ. ಪರಿಮಳ ಬರುವುದೇ ಅದು ಮುಗಿಯುತ್ತಿರುವಾಗ.
There is a hard fact inside the camphor image. Camphor does not survive, and leaves not even ash. The fragrance comes precisely as it is being used up.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
ಮನುಷ್ಯನ ಸ್ವಭಾವ ಕಾಣುವುದು ಎಲ್ಲ ಸರಿಯಾಗಿರುವಾಗ ಅಲ್ಲ. ಕೆಲಸ ಹೋದಾಗ, ವಿಚಾರಣೆ ಶುರುವಾದಾಗ, ಮನೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಯಿಲೆ ಬಂದಾಗ ಅವನು ಹೇಗೆ ಮಾತಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ ಎಂಬುದರಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಣುತ್ತದೆ.
A man’s nature does not show while everything is in order. It shows in how he speaks when the job goes, when an inquiry starts, when there is illness at home.
ಕಷ್ಟ ಒಳ್ಳೆಯದು ಎಂದು ಶ್ಲೋಕ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿಲ್ಲ. ಒಳಗೆ ಏನಿದೆ ಎಂಬುದು ಆಗ ಹೊರಗೆ ಬರುತ್ತದೆ ಎಂದಷ್ಟೇ ಹೇಳುತ್ತಿದೆ. ಒಳಗೆ ಪರಿಮಳ ಇಲ್ಲದಿದ್ದರೆ ಬೆಂಕಿಯಿಂದ ಅದು ಹುಟ್ಟುವುದಿಲ್ಲ.
The verse does not say trouble is good. It says only that what is inside comes out then. If there is no fragrance inside, the fire will not create any.
