Those are the good, the crowns of the world, who show goodness even to people who have done them no favour. Even a wicked man, wearied and bound by his own errands, shows compassion to those who helped him before.
About this subhashita
Mauli means the head or the crown. Mauli of the world’s circle is the ornament on the world’s head. The thought is that such people are what adorn the world.
The second line brings in the wicked man for comparison. Even he can be grateful, so gratitude alone is not the measure of saintliness, the poet suggests.

For life today
How we treat people who are of no use to us is the real test of character. Conduct towards junior staff or a passing patient shows it.
Gratitude is good. The verse quietly says one can practise a generosity that goes beyond it.
