Harder than diamond, and softer than a flower. Who indeed is fit to know through and through the hearts of those who stand beyond the common world?
About this subhashita
Kathorani and mridūni are both neuter plurals, and both attach to cetamsi in the second line. So the whole first line hangs in the air, with nothing yet to describe.
Vajra is both the diamond and Indra’s thunderbolt. In either sense it is the last measure of hardness in Sanskrit, as kusuma is the last measure of softness. The verse puts both ends of the scale in one place.
This same verse is well known from Bhavabhuti’s Uttararamacarita. There the last line reads ko nu, while here it reads ko hi. The sense is not altered.

For life today
Telling a family bad news needs both of these at once: the hardness not to shrink the truth, and the softness in the way it is said.
Hardness by itself becomes coarseness. Softness by itself becomes helplessness. What the verse praises is the pair, not either one of them taken alone.
