The good do not go bad through the fault of the company they keep. Sandalwood, though great snakes are coiled about it, does not turn into poison.
ಈ ಸುಭಾಷಿತದ ಬಗ್ಗೆAbout this subhashita
Vishayate is a verb made from the noun visha itself. It means becomes poison. Turning poison into a verb instead of reaching for another word is a nicety of Sanskrit.
Snakes coiled round a sandal tree is a picture that returns again and again in poetry. Behind it lies the belief that snakes come for the coolness of the sandalwood. The hint is that others gather round a good person for the same reason.
The word vikriti is used in another verse of this same section for milk turning to curd. Here the same word stands for a character going bad.

ಇಂದಿನ ಬದುಕಿಗೆFor life today
When a workplace has gone bad we conclude easily that everyone in it is bad. There are those who have not gone that way. Recognising them and standing with them matters.
One thing alongside that. The verse speaks of a grown sandal tree, not of a sapling. What company we leave the still growing in matters more.
